he Philippine Commonwealth was inaugurated in November 1935, a ten-year transitional government towards the real independence which was supposed to be declared in July 1946. But it was temporarily intercepted by the Japanese invasion to the Philippines in January 1942 when the Philippine Executive Commission was created under the Japanese military control, Japanese Military Administration.

In October 1943 the 2nd Republic of the Philippines was inaugurated, of which Jose P. Laurel was appointed by the Japanese as President.

At the end of the Japanese occupation of the Philippines, the Philippine Commonwealth was reinstated in March 1945. President Sergio Osmena, Sr. was the 2nd president of the Philippine Commonwealth taking over Manuel L. Quezon who passed away in Washington, D. C. in August 1944.
