On August 8th, 2023, just after midnight, devastating wildfires in Hawaii left at least 99 people dead and damaged or destroyed more than 2,200 structures and buildings.
The wildfires are not only described as the deadliest natural disaster in Hawaii since it's statehood in 1959, but also the deadliest U.S. wildfire in the last century.
Some locals are blaming the blaze on Hawaiian Electric Industries, the state's largest utility company, for leaving their powerlines on in high-risk areas after the National Weather Service issued multiple warnings.
