24, 1930 - Died August 27, 2023
Robert L. Gans, a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and lifelong Staten Islander, passed away on August 27, 2023. Robert, born on June 24, 1930, and his brothers Herbert and Rudolph were born on Staten Island to Marie and Herbert Gans. His father, a Pro-am golfer and pioneer aviator, once flew with Amelia Earhart.
The Gans family estate and property on Grymes Hill, purchased by immigrant John Gans, who operated the Gans Steamship Line, was sold to Notre Dame College, now part of St. John's University.
Robert attended grade school at Staten Island Academy and high school at LaSalle Military Academy.
A graduate of Georgetown University, Robert avidly read books on history, politics and the Civil War, and greatly admired Abraham Lincoln.
He was a founder and the CEO of Swim at Home, a swimming pool company, and Ad Lib records--the parent company of Lenox Records where Jimmy Rosselli and Esther Phillips recorded their early hits. Robert was Executive Producer for composer and conductor George Siravo on the Ad Lib label.
Later he worked for the Williard Alexander Booking Agency.
He had an innate quick, dry wit. Robert delighted in telling people his last name translated to "goose" in German.
It gratified him to watch Canada Geese migrate in their V-formation and found it endearing that they mate for life. He loved birdwatching, nature and walks in the woods or on the beach.
Coming from a long line of dog lovers, he enjoyed the companionship of his German Shepherd, Madchen, and his dachshund, Perche.
He was an enthusiastic skeet and pistol shooter, golfer and tennis player.
Robert enjoyed trips with friends to Nantucket, Barbados and Europe, and appreciated good food and wine, dining in Manhattan at the Bull and Bear and Café Pierre restaurants.
