The President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, advocated on Tuesday that Biomodulin T should be part of primary health care in Cuban communities and that doctors should be prepared there for its prescription, when he met with health experts who, since the COVID-19 pandemic, have led the approach from science and innovation to the health problems faced by the island.

At the meeting, which usually takes place at the Palace of the Revolution, Doctor of Science Alexis Labrada Rosado, director of Research and Development of the National Center for Biopreparations (Biocen), recalled that Biomodulin T - based on bovine thymus extract - is indicated for immune dysfunction and the treatment of recurrent infections in the elderly.

After a clinical trial on almost 9,000 patients in nursing homes, the frequency of acute respiratory infections (ARI) was reduced by a little more than five times.

According to him, the risk of dying from this cause in the elderly who reside in these health institutions was reduced by half, when compared to those who, at the same age, are outside nursing homes.

Labrada Rosado explained that the clinical trials also showed that after the administration of Biomodulin T in the elderly, a 70% reduction in the incidence of respiratory infections was achieved.

According to Liliams Rodríguez Rivera, director of the Longevity, Aging and Health Research Center, this is currently the leading cause of death in the country's nursing homes.

This drug has also been studied with very good results in oncology, from the combined treatment with chemotherapy and immunotherapy of cancer.

The researcher pointed out that it rejuvenates the immune system of the patients, who then have more capacity to counteract the disease.

Biomodulin T has also shown safety and efficacy in the treatment of thymic hypoplasia in children, a genetic disease that causes infants to suffer a high percentage of infections in the first years of life. According to Labrada Rosado, 83 % of the children treated with the drug normalized the size of their thymus and its function, and 71 % had clinical improvement criteria.

In view of these encouraging results, the Cuban President indicated to speed up everything related to this medicine, fundamentally due to the aging process the nation is going through, and the welfare that its administration could mean for Cuban children.

Biomodulin T reached its greatest momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic, when Biocen marketed 1,988,953 units, and more than 238,000 patients were treated.
