The FN, which became the Rassemblement National (RN) in 2018, and which until then had kept its distance from sports, entered the arena and launched a series of attacks on a team it deemed unrepresentative and less patriotic than before.

Le Pen's remarks reopened wounds, such as those of Bernard Lama, from French Guiana, who hit back: "I didn't ask to have ancestors deported into slavery."
