Watch the Maximsnew Work Haiti Tropical Storm Tomas - Emergency Preparations Minustah video, MaximsNewsNetwork 04 November 2010 -- UNMINUSTAH Port-au-Prince, Haiti -- The United Nations UN warned that the fast-approaching tropical storm Tomas could affect up to half a million people in Haiti and called for fast delivery of emergency supplies and equipment needed to help people prepare for the storm the UN's agencies and its stabilization mission in Haiti, MINUSTAH, have been working with the Government of Haiti and humanitarian partners to pre-position emergency supplies and equipment, including trucks, water and sanitation materials, shelter, food and non-food items in the areas most likely to be hit by the storm. In Corail Cesselesse camp for the internally displaced IDP, 200 families are being evacuated by the International Organization for Migration IOM to temporary shelters. The move, however, has caused some confusion. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs OCHA reported that Haitian authorities have been encouraging residents of low-lying coastal areas and camps to seek alternative shelter, where possible, with families and friends settled in safer places. The relocation site, however, can only accommodate 1800 people. According to OCHA, the storm may be the third humanitarian crisis that Haiti faces this year, coming amid ongoing efforts to assist up to a million people left homeless by the earthquake that devastated the country in January, and a cholera outbreak that erupted last month.
